We were recently blessed to have both grandbabies at our home for the whole day. One of them even got to spend the night! Here is an hourly breakdown of our day:
5:00 AM – Waiting For Their Arrival
Time for coffee!! Lyra will be here at 5:45am! She was awake and ready to go when mom and dad dropped her off for the day.
6:00 AM – Time to Explore, Play and Read
There is a lot to explore at Grandma and Grandpa’s house this morning! Lyra found her binky strapped to the backpack and had to sneak a taste! Grandpa built a fort from cushions (fort didn’t last long, but the cushions were a hit all day long) There are many books to choose from. We keep a full shelf of story options.

7:00 AM – Breakfast Fun
By 7:00 AM, the kitchen is alive with the smell of a broccoli/cheddar quiche in the oven and the sound of giggles. I added some mandarins. Breakfast is a feast of laughter and sticky fingers.

8:00 AM – Alder Arrives
Alder arrives at 8:00 AM. He will be staying the night with us. It’s time for a little bit of Miss Rachel
9:00 AM – Lyra’s Nap Time
With such an early morning arrival, Lyra is ready for her nap. She goes down easily into the crib we have set up. Sound machine on, camera on, black out curtains shut. She has always been a good sleeper and took a 3 hour nap! Both of our grandkids have always slept with a sound machine on.

It’s the best when you get nap trapped! Cuddling nap time let’s us nap too! Grandpa enjoyed being nap trapped.
12:00 PM – Alder’s Snack Time
Alder enjoys a snack. He doesn’t get too many solids yet, but boy does he want them! He enjoyed a teething cracker. When Lyra woke up from her long nap she had lunch.

1:00 PM – Outdoor Time
The sun was shining and we wanted to get outside. We loaded the kids into their strollers and off we went. There are several parks in our neighborhood and we stopped at two of them.

2:00 PM – Swinging In The Park
The swings were a huge hit! Even little Alder got to swing in a big kid swing. Lyra explored all the things, like she always does. Alder took a little nap after the park.
3:00 PM – Nap Time (Or Not!)
Lyra was sure ready for a nap. But did NOT nap. There is just much to do at Grandma and Grandpas.
4:00 PM – PLAYTIME!
The afternoon is for indoor play. We play with toys, explore new things, read stories and just enjoy being together in our little world.
5:00 PM – Dinner Prep and Family Time
As the day winds down, we start preparing dinner. I look forward to when the kids help with simple tasks like setting the table or stirring a pot. For now they are too young. We do make dinner a time to come together as a family, sharing food and love.
6:00 PM – Cuddles on The Balcony
With dinner done, we head out to enjoy our balcony. The cool air is refreshing, and the neighborhood is peaceful. We watch the birds at all the feeders. It’s a calm, reflective time after a day full of activity.
7:00 PM – Bedtime Routine – Alder
The day ends with the soothing routine of bedtime. We read one last story, wrap him into his sleep sack, sing a lullaby, and tuck him into bed with a goodnight kiss. The house quiets down as he drifts off to sleep, and I’m left with a heart full of love and gratitude.

8:00 PM – Disney Movie Time
Lyra will be picked up this same evening, so we do not put her to bed. We settle down on the couch and cuddle while watching Moana. Lyra is really tired. Maybe we should have put her down to bed. She struggles to stay awake and eventually falls asleep in my arms.
9:00 PM – Lyra is Picked up and Reflecting on the Day
Lyra gets picked up. We tuck her away in her car seat and know she will most likely sleep all the way home. As the house settles into silence, I take a moment to reflect on the day. Each hour spent with my grandchildren is a treasure, filled with love, laughter, and memories that I’ll cherish forever. There’s a special kind of magic in the ordinary moments we share, and I’m so grateful for every one of them.
Spending a day with my grandchildren is the best kind of adventure—one filled with joy, creativity, and love. Each hour brings new discoveries and deeper connections, reminding me of the simple, beautiful things in life.
I look forward to many more days spent together as they grow. There are just so many things to do and share with them. What are some of your favorite things to do with your grandchildren when you have them for the day?
